What time zone am I in?

Your device's time zone and the time zone of your IP address, side by side. They should match; when they do not, websites notice — a device clock in one country and an address in another is the most common sign of a VPN or proxy.

The zone of the place geolocation databases associate with your address: usually right for fixed lines, often the gateway city on mobile networks, the server's zone on a VPN. The local time there is shown live.

Your time zone

The device time zone comes from your operating system via the browser (Intl.DateTimeFormat().resolvedOptions().timeZone), with its current UTC offset and whether daylight saving is in effect. The current time is shown in it and in UTC.

UTC offset

How far your zone is from Coordinated Universal Time, written as UTC+1 or UTC−5. Many zones have two offsets per year (standard and summer time); the zone name (Europe/Berlin) is the stable identifier, the offset is what it currently resolves to.

Daylight saving time

Whether your zone is currently on summer time, and the dates of the next change. Not every zone observes it; those that do switch on different dates, which is why UTC+1 and Central European Time are not interchangeable.

Time zone from your IP

The time zone associated with your address's location in the geolocation databases, as shown on the IP location finder. It is as approximate as the location: right for most fixed-line connections, often the gateway city's zone on mobile networks, and the server's zone on a VPN.

Device vs IP time zone mismatch

A mismatch means your device thinks it is in one zone and your network appears to be in another. Innocent causes: traveling with a device set to home time, a mobile gateway in another zone, a wrongly set clock. The interesting cause: a VPN or proxy — the address is in the server's country but the device is not, which fraud and streaming systems use as a detection signal. If you use a VPN and want to avoid standing out, set the device zone to the server's or choose a server in your own zone; the proxy and VPN checker shows the mismatch as one of its signals.

Frequently asked questions

What time is it in UTC right now?

The UTC time is shown at the top of this page, computed from your device's clock. UTC never changes for daylight saving; it is the reference every other zone is defined against.

What time zone is New York City in?

America/New_York: Eastern Time, UTC−5 in winter (EST) and UTC−4 in summer (EDT).

Which states have multiple time zones?

In the US: Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee and Texas each span two zones; Alaska spans two; Arizona is one zone but mostly skips daylight saving.

How are time zones determined?

By law in each country: governments pick an offset from UTC and whether to observe daylight saving, roughly following the sun (15° of longitude per hour) but adjusted to borders and economics. The IANA time zone database records every rule and its history.

How do I convert UTC time to EST time?

EST is UTC−5: subtract five hours (15:00 UTC = 10:00 EST). During daylight saving, New York is on EDT, UTC−4, so subtract four. Check which applies on the date in question.

Device zone from Intl.DateTimeFormat (your operating system's setting) and the platform's IANA time zone data; IP zone from the CheckMyIP lookup consensus when reachable, otherwise the Cloudflare edge view. Clocks run on your device's time. Nothing is stored.
