MAC address lookup

Enter a MAC address to find which manufacturer made the network interface, using the IEEE's public registry of assigned prefixes (refreshed monthly). Useful for identifying unknown devices on your Wi-Fi — and for understanding why your phone's address keeps changing.

Any format: 00:1A:2B:3C:4D:5E, 00-1a-2b-3c-4d-5e, 001a.2b3c.4d5e or 001A2B3C4D5E. A prefix (the first three pairs) is enough for the vendor; one address per line looks up several at once. Nothing is stored.

No address entered yet

Paste a MAC address above or pick an example. Only the registry chunk for that prefix is downloaded.

Look up a MAC address

Paste a MAC address in any common format (02:00:5E:10:00:01, 02-00-5E-10-00-01, 0200.5E10.0001); only the first part is used for the vendor lookup, and nothing is stored. Several addresses, one per line, are looked up together.

Vendor details

The result shows the registered organization, its address block and the block size.

OUI, MA-M and MA-S

The IEEE sells prefixes in three sizes: a 24-bit OUI (MA-L, 16 million addresses per block), a 28-bit MA-M (1 million) and a 36-bit MA-S (4,096). The lookup checks all three registries, longest match first, which is why some addresses resolve to a small company rather than the chip maker.

Locally administered bit

The second-least-significant bit of the first byte (x2, x6, xA, xE as the second hex digit) marks an address that was set by software, not assigned by a manufacturer. No vendor lookup applies; it is almost always a randomized address (below) or a virtual machine.

Randomized / private MAC addresses

Since iOS 14, Android 10 and Windows 10, devices use a different random MAC address for each Wi-Fi network by default, so that networks cannot track a device across locations. The random address has the locally administered bit set and no vendor; your router's device list shows it instead of the real hardware address, and MAC-based filters or reservations need the per-network address. The hardware address is still used for Ethernet and shown in the device settings.

How to find your MAC address

Each system shows it in the network details; Wi-Fi and Ethernet have different addresses.

Windows

ipconfig /all in a terminal, the Physical Address line under the adapter; or Settings › Network & internet › the connection › Physical address (MAC).

macOS

System Settings › Network › the connection › Details › Hardware; or ifconfig en0 | grep ether in Terminal.

iPhone

Settings › General › About › Wi-Fi Address (the hardware address). The per-network random address is under Settings › Wi-Fi › ⓘ › Private Wi-Fi Address.

Android

Settings › About phone › Status › Wi-Fi MAC address (hardware); the per-network randomized address is in the Wi-Fi network's details.

Frequently asked questions

What is a MAC address?

The 48-bit hardware identifier of a network interface, written as six pairs of hexadecimal digits, assigned by the manufacturer from a block it bought from the IEEE. It is used to deliver frames on the local network and never leaves it.

Can you give me an example of a MAC address?

02:00:5E:10:00:01 — six pairs of hexadecimal digits. In a manufacturer-assigned address the first three pairs identify the maker and the last three the individual interface; this example has the locally administered bit set, so it belongs to no vendor.

Can a MAC address be hacked?

A MAC address cannot be hacked by itself; it can be spoofed (any software can set one) and it can be used to track a device across Wi-Fi networks, which is why phones now randomize it. It is not visible to websites, only to the local network.

What is MAC address filtering?

A router feature that allows or blocks devices by MAC address. It stops casual connections but not anyone who can see the address and set their own to match; use WPA3 and a strong password instead, and treat filtering as convenience, not security.

What does ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff mean?

The broadcast address: a frame sent to ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff is delivered to every device on the local network, used by ARP and DHCP discovery.

Is your Wi-Fi address the same as your MAC address?

On iPhones, Wi-Fi Address in Settings is the hardware MAC address of the Wi-Fi interface; the Private Wi-Fi Address per network is the randomized one that networks actually see.

How do I get my MAC address using the Command Prompt?

ipconfig /all lists every adapter with its Physical Address; getmac prints only the addresses.
